Civil services is most sought and lucrative job in india though challenging. UPSC is going to start registration for civil services application from 31 May. Thousands of candidates are preparing seriously for civil services for years and awaiting for application curiously. Here i am going to outline the nature of IAS job profile which generally is not available on internet .

IAS TRAINING :-
After getting selected for IAS , the cadre undergoes training of 101 weeks at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy for Administration at Mussorie. The training scedule is divided into phases:-
1.Foundation Course (15 weeks)
2. IAS Professional Course. Phase -I (26 weeks)
3. District training (52 Weeks)
4. IAS Professional course Phase-II (8 weeks)
The course impart rigrous training to the officer trainee in wide range of subjects that include policy making, law & order, National security, agriculture, land administration & management, rural development, urban management, infrastructure, PPP( Public Private Partnership), e- governance, soft skill, project management, engineering skill, financial management, social sector, weaker section & minorities.
After completion of training, the officer is inducted in state cadre and get the designation of SDM.
Recently a committee headed by Kiran Agrawal has recommended that IAS training should be reduced to 75 weeks but the recommendations are under consideration.
IAS training schedule is balanced with studies as well as visiting programmes and officer trainee visits almost all part of our country. This is the period that cant be forget by an IAS. He enjoys training programme comprising of academic, visits & tours that are accomodated with sports and extra curricular activities.

NATURE OF JOB :-
IAS is the most versetile job available in India. IAS officer performs variety of jobs ranging from law & order, policy implementation, by Go HD 1.1″ href=”#”>finance
, social sector, agriculture, public administration to advising elected representative (MLA & MP) on policy crafting. But advisor role is limited at senior position.
The daily routine of an IAS is depend upon place of posting and nature of work. Generally he gets enough time for recreation but in extreme condition like flood, communal riots, terror attack, strike, election time , natural disaster and unforeseen situation, he has to be on his toes. CHALLENGES :- As i mention earlier, IAS job is as much challenging as it is luxurious. Biggest challenge for IAS is posting schedule. We can estimate posting turnover from eminent IAS officer Ashok Khemka career who got 45 posting in his 20 years of career so far. But it is not same for all. When IAS officer gets settled in a dept, understands work and policies then he is transferred to another dept due to administration issues. In other words, IAS gets posting frequently as per administration requirement. In this way , he accomodates knowledge of all dept. , social sector, business and many streams in order to facilitiates governance.
Most attractive Job :- Civil services exam is considered as the toughest exam to crack because IAS enjoys a dignified life and have lakhs of aspirants. IAS gets handsome salary package, facilities, perks, exercise authority and enjoys respect in society. The best thing is the SELF SATISFACTION that comes from public service. Apart from this, IAS acquired enormous experience of administration that can be utilised after retirement.

Whether to go for IAS or not :- If you are people friendly person and love to serve public. It is the best option for you. Utilise your time in prepration , burn mid night oil and achieve it. If you are not people friendly and love machines, engineering or your current profession, don’t go for it. These are just facts and judgement is your wisdom.
